Woman scratching at psoriasis not realizing it can lead to hearing loss.

When you think of psoriasis, you probably think about all those commercials showing people with skin issues. Psoriasis goes beyond skin problems and really impacts your general health. Psoriasis is commonly misunderstood and minimized, due to a lack of knowledge of how psoriasis impacts sufferers as well as the serious conditions that can be related to this disorder. Psoriasis causes reactions throughout the whole body even though skin plaques are the most familiar sign: Chronic inflammation that can raise the chance of metabolic problems and cardiovascular disease.

Psoriasis is also connected to another problem according to a different recent study: Hearing loss. Published in The Journal of Rheumatology, The link between mental health, hearing impairment, and psoriatic arthritis were looked at in this study. Psoriatic arthritis is a type of psoriasis where inflammation is centered near the joints, causing swelling, difficulty moving, and pain. Affected individuals may also suffer from psoriasis, but with psoriatic arthritis, it’s possible to have swelling without also having the tell-tale plaques.

In the same way as with rheumatoid arthritis (and like psoriasis), psoriatic arthritis is an autoimmune illness, the sufferer’s body is essentially attacking its own healthy tissue. But psoriatic arthritis varies from rheumatoid arthritis in that it’s frequently asymmetrical (so you could have it in one knee but not the other), and it doesn’t only affect joints but leads to painfully swollen fingers and toes while it targets sufferer’s nails and eyes.

Based on the findings of this recent study, inflammation from psoriatic arthritis could also impact hearing. A large control group of people with neither psoriasis or psoriatic arthritis were contrasted against people who had one or the other problem. They discovered that hearing loss was more likely to be documented by the group that had psoriasis, and those reports were supported by audiometric testing. Even when controlling for other risk considerations, psoriatic arthritis sufferers were significantly more prone to suffer from hearing loss than either {the control group or psoriasis sufferers}.

But that’s not to say there’s no link between psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis and hearing loss. A 2015 study found that people who have been diagnosed with psoriasis are at a considerably higher risk of developing sudden sensorineural hearing loss, also known as sudden deafness. With sudden sensorineural hearing loss, sufferer’s ability to hear decreases substantially in three days or less. There are various likely causes for this, but experts theorize that people with psoriasis are at higher risk as a result of the type of rapid inflammation that happens during a flare-up of psoriasis symptoms. The hearing might be impaired if this occurs around or in the cochlea. This kind of hearing loss, in certain situations, can be helped by treatments that alleviate psoriasis., but hearing aids are often recommended when sudden deafness doesn’t react to other treatments.

It’s worthwhile to monitor your hearing if you suffer from psoriasis or psoriatic arthritis. Plan your yearly healthcare appointment along with regular hearing exams. Disease caused by inflammation can lead to injury of the inner ear, which can cause loss of balance and psoriatic arthritis. Psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis are both also linked with depression and anxiety, which can both aggravated loss of hearing. Other health concerns, like dementia, can be the outcome if you don’t detect hearing loss early.

Recognition is key, and working with your doctors and regularly having your hearing tested can help you keep in front of symptoms with early intervention. Neither hearing loss nor psoriasis should influence you to compromise your standard of living, and all the difference is having the proper team on your side.
