The Better Hearing Institute is a not-for-profit corporation that, according to its website at www.betterhearing.org, “educates the public about the neglected problem of hearing loss and what can be done about it.” One of the ways the organization achieves its objectives is to do “authoritative research on the incidence of hearing loss, the benefits of treatment and the consequences of ignoring it” as well as related topics.
Serving as Executive Director of the Institute is Dr. Sergei Kochkin, Ph.D. With over 25 year’s corporate experience as a market research and industrial psychologist, Dr. Kochkin has published nearly 70 papers on the hearing loss population and the hearing aid market. Additionally, every four years he conducts the largest panel research on more than 30,000 hearing aid owners.
Recent results of one of his surveys show that behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aids now represent 63% of all hearing aid sales, an increase from less than 20% of sales prior to 2000. Why? All because of the popularity and overall user satisfaction of the mini-BTE styles like the open fit style and the receiver in the canal style (RIC).
